Spring Cleaning Organizing Checklist : A Fresh Start for Your Home

Friends, I am the first to admit that cleaning is not my favorite thing to do.  I absolutely love to organize, but cleaning is another story.  Every year when spring rolls around I plan to embrace a new attitude but I’ve been successful at that approximately zero times!  This year I decided to take matters into my own hands and I came up with a better plan. My plan is simple, I just broke it down into manageable steps and pretty soon my spring cleaning and organizing was under way.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your space, clear out clutter, and create a more organized home. Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's begin again.' It's a time for fresh starts, new growth, and the perfect opportunity to refresh and renew your space. Sometimes the idea of tackling your entire home can feel overwhelming. That’s where an organized checklist comes in handy. By breaking the process into manageable steps, you can create a home that feels lighter, more functional, and ready for the sunny days ahead.

Here’s your spring cleaning organizing checklist to help you get started:

Let’s Start with a Plan

Before you dive into the cleaning and organizing process, take a few minutes to outline a plan. Think about the rooms or areas that need the most attention and prioritize them. Whether it’s the cluttered garage or the neglected closet, a plan will help you stay focused and make the process feel less overwhelming.

Tip: Break the project into smaller tasks. For example, don’t think about cleaning the entire kitchen in one go. Focus on the pantry, then move to the drawers, and so on.

Declutter First

The first step in any organizing project is decluttering. This is a crucial part of the spring cleaning process, as it allows you to let go of items that no longer serve you. Start with one area at a time, whether it’s a closet, cabinet, or drawer. Ask yourself these questions as you go through your things:

  • Have I used this item in the last year?
  • Does this item still bring me joy or serve a purpose?
  • Is this item in good condition, or is it time to replace it?

Tip: For every item you decide to donate or toss, set it aside in a bag or box immediately. This prevents second-guessing later and keeps the decluttering momentum going.

Clean and Freshen Up

Once the clutter is cleared, it’s time for a deep clean. Dusting and wiping down surfaces is important, but spring cleaning also means tackling areas that may not get attention on a regular basis. Think about baseboards, window blinds, ceiling fans, and the inside of cabinets.

Tip: Use natural cleaning products where possible, such as a mix of vinegar and water or baking soda. These options are gentle on your surfaces and the environment.

Organize and Maximize Space

Now that you’ve decluttered and cleaned, it’s time to organize. Begin by assessing how you can maximize storage space in each area. Invest in organizational tools like baskets, bins, drawer dividers, and closet organizers. Remember to keep similar items together to make them easy to find later.

Pro Tip: Label containers so that you always know what’s inside. A label maker can make a big difference in maintaining order. This P-Touch Cube Plus is the one we love and recommend!

Tackle the Paper Pile

Paper clutter is a common issue in many homes, and it tends to accumulate quickly. Take time during your spring cleaning session to go through important documents and papers. Shred what you no longer need, file what’s important, and set up a system for managing incoming paperwork going forward.

Tip: Consider going paperless for bills and other documents where possible to reduce future clutter.

Seasonal Closet Refresh

Spring is the perfect natural reset — especially for your wardrobe. As the weather shifts, your closet should shift with it.

Start by pulling out heavier winter pieces like coats, bulky sweaters, and boots. Before storing them, pause and reflect: what didn’t you wear this season? If you skipped over it all winter, that’s a sign it may be time to donate or consign. Editing while the season is still fresh in your mind makes decision-making so much easier.

Next, bring forward your lighter pieces and organize with intention:

  • Dresses together
  • Short-sleeve and sleeveless tops together
  • Jeans and casual pants together
  • Activewear in one clear zone

Clear categories instantly make your closet feel more like a boutique and less like a storage space. When you can see what you own, getting dressed becomes simpler and more enjoyable.

Tip: Store off-season clothing in labeled bins or under-bed storage to keep your closet looking tidy and organized.

Create an Easy Maintenance Routine

Spring cleaning is just the beginning. To maintain a clean and organized home, create a routine that works for you. This could be a weekly decluttering session, daily 10-minute tidying bursts, or a monthly deep-cleaning schedule. The key to staying organized is consistency. Don’t wait for another spring to roll around before addressing clutter again—small, ongoing efforts make a big difference.

By following this spring cleaning organizing checklist, you’ll not only create a home that’s refreshed and decluttered but also set up systems that will help maintain order throughout the year. It’s all about breaking things down into manageable tasks, staying consistent, and allowing yourself to enjoy the process of organizing.
